Step 1 of 8

Clarify the Strategic Challenge

Every project starts with one important question:

What do we need ideas for?

Before generating solutions, I define the challenge clearly enough that another person could generate useful ideas without needing a long explanation.

Key Outputs

  • The reason this challenge matters
  • The audience or stakeholder affected
  • The mission or opportunity statement
  • What is in scope and out of scope
  • Constraints such as budget, time, systems, people, regulations, or risk
  • One to three exploration areas to guide research and idea generation

Why This Matters

Without strategic clarity, innovation energy gets wasted. Teams may create interesting ideas that do not solve the right problem. A clear challenge focuses time, creativity, and decision-making.
