Step 3 of 8

Gather Stimulus

Instead of relying only on what I already know, I deliberately look for outside inspiration. Stimulus helps break normal thinking patterns and creates unexpected connections.

Common Stimulus Sources

  • Market: Competitors, adjacent industries, pricing models, packaging, customer promises
  • Insight: Customer frustrations, workarounds, unmet needs, behavioral patterns
  • Technology: New tools, patents, platforms, automation, AI, materials, data capabilities
  • Future: Trends, demographic shifts, regulatory changes, emerging expectations
  • Wisdom: Research, experts, proven principles, lessons from other fields
  • Unrelated Inspiration: Analogies from nature, art, games, logistics, sports, entertainment, or other industries

Creative Prompt

What could this unrelated example teach us about our challenge?

Why This Matters

Most organizations overuse internal thinking. Stimulus expands the possibility space and helps create ideas that are more meaningfully unique.
